Position

Biosafety Specialist

Description

The successful applicant will serve as the focal point for biosafety guidance, support, and oversight at a U.S. government agency.  The individual will provide consultation and recommendations to ensure that agency-sponsored biodefense R&D programs comply with all applicable biosafety regulations, standards, and guidelines.  The individual will advise management and research staff on biosafety concerns at U.S. government and contractor facilities, and will support the implementation of an agency-wide biosafety compliance infrastructure.   

Requirements

Applicants must have substantive academic and professional backgrounds in the biological sciences, with minimum requirements of a Bachelor’s degree in a relevant scientific field and at least 3 years of laboratory research or biosafety management experience. Applicants should have extensive knowledge of NIH/CDC biosafety standards and guidelines, including those set forth in Biosafety in Microbiological and Biomedical Laboratories (BMBL) and NIH Guidelines for Research Involving Recombinant DNA.  Strong oral and written communication skills are also essential for success in this position. 

Competitive Qualifications

Special consideration will be given to applicants with advanced scientific degrees and ABSA credentials (CBSP or RBP certifications).  Experience conducting research or managing laboratory operations in biocontainment facilities is preferred.  Previous Institutional Biosafety Committee (IBC) involvement is beneficial, and familiarity with federal biodefense R&D programs is also a plus.  

Security Clearance

Applicants must be able to obtain and maintain a government security clearance; an existing clearance is highly desirable.
